In social animals, the alpha is the individual in the community with the highest rank.
The community we are in right now is dominated by the presence of the military. There is the Kings Bay Naval Base and you see government vehicles and personnel in most places when you are out and about. There is also a large group of retired military living here due to the multitude of facilities that are available to them.
The interesting observation is the air of confidence that most of the military people have when they are in public. Many of them are in great shape and they know it. They are neatly dressed, extremely polite and walk with a definite swagger if they are in uniform. It’s refreshing to see those kinds of people around us who seem to know who they are.
Of course Hollywood is constantly trying to define the alpha male but all you really have to do is go hang out around a military base.
