Traveling through the Carolina’s has provided numerous examples of some fantastic history. The Civil War alone provides dozens of interesting sites and facts about the states. South Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies….Fort Sumter was where the first shot of the Civil War took place…North Carolina is said to be the first colony to revolt against the taxation by Britain. As you can guess, the history of the region is phenomenal and contains many of the roots that have made America what it is today.
During our in-depth study of this history we have discovered two facts about North Myrtle Beach that are not commonly known.
First – North Myrtle Beach is the birthplace of Vanna White. She is probably more well-known than just about anyone … except maybe the President of the United States. Born Vanna Marie Rosich; February 18, 1957, she has made a deep impression on all who have watched her work on “Wheel of Fortune”. Truly an American icon.
Secondly – the North Myrtle Beach area claims to be the home of the “Shag”, which is the state dance of both North and South Carolina. The Shag was popular in the 40’s and still is among residents of both states. We saw a picture of a dancing couple on the local water tower declaring North Myrtle Beach as the “Home of the Shag”.
The Carolina Shag is a six-count partner dance done mostly to moderate tempo music. During the dance the upper body and hips hardly move as the legs do convoluted kicks and fancy footwork. The lead dancer is the center of attention, and the partner’s steps either mirror the lead’s or mark time while the lead shows off with spins and other gyrations.
We live in a great country.
