The artist whose work receives the most public votes wins $200,000! – http://www.artprize.org
We took a day off from our grueling schedule and went to experience ArtPrize exhibitions that are being shown throughout the Grand Rapids downtown. It is a 19-day exhibition that draws people from all over the mid-west to experience art that is everywhere.
We also visited the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. My first impression was that the gardens would be a distraction and ArtPrize would be the main attraction. I was very wrong.
The Meijer Gardens is one of the finest places we have ever visited and I would encourage people to put it on their “bucket list”. We took a tram tour of the gardens and then walked it to take a closer look at the sculptures.
After that we took a shuttle bus downtown and spent the rest of the afternoon working our way around downtown Grand Rapids and visited some of the venues. There were about 7 main exhibition centers around the city and literally dozens of other venues around at different locations.
We visited only a portion of the total art exhibits….but we TOTALLY enjoyed the walk around downtown and the art works that were presented in various forms.
Art is alive and well in Western Michigan.
